The Dolly Chat

The week Dolly Parton passed, something strange happened to our feeds. The doom scrolling stopped. In its place: stories, laughter, music, and a country grieving together — all walks of life, agreeing on one woman. Somebody called it Dolly scrolling.

So Dave sat down with his buddy Kathy Bales, a lifelong Dolly fan and high school teacher, to do the only reasonable thing: talk about her for an hour.

Kathy met Dolly through "Coat of Many Colors" — a song about a patched coat that sounded a lot like the patched pants her neighbor sewed for her when her dad lost his job. Dave met Dolly at age five, through a white plastic record player and Dolly Parton's Greatest Hits in Dickson, Tennessee. Neither of them ever really let go.

The conversation covers the generosity most people are only now hearing about. The Imagination Library. The Buddy Program that cut her home county's dropout rate from 35% to 6%. The My People Fund after the Smoky Mountain fires. Rescuing Porter Wagoner's company and gifting it back to him. The letters, the voicemails, the quiet checks nobody was supposed to know about.

They talk about her faith, too — never in your face, never in question. She said it plainly: we're not the judges. We're supposed to love our neighbor. She lived a message this show has been trying to say from day one.

And they count down their top three songs, ending exactly where you'd think — and also not.

Dolly changed the temperature of every room she ever walked into. That job is open now.

Go share your Dolly story with somebody this week. And keep an eye on @neighborlypour for a cocktail called Coat of Many Colors.
